 Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald was a singer and jazz vocalist.

She was born in 1918. She grew up in New York where she had a very difficult childhood. Her mother died when she was 15 leaving her alone and with no money. Ella was taken in by her aunt but soon dropped out of school. After some tough years, Ella got her first big break at the Apollo Theater Amateur Night in 1934. This placed her on the map, and got her a spot in Chick Webb's Orchestra. From there, Ella had a very successful career performing and recording many records. She was particularly well known for her scat singing and warm tone. She died at the age of 79 in 1996.
