Johannes

Brahms

Johannes Brahms was a composer in the Romantic Period.

Brahms was born in 1833 in Germany. Brahms learned to play the piano at age seven. He was performing in cafe's and hotels by the time he was a teenager. Brahms career was launched when he met Robert Schumann, a musician and critic. Schumann wrote very positively about Brahm's music and this helped Brahms to become more well known. Brahms played at different courts and continued to compose many different types of music. He spent his entire life writing and playing music primarily in Germany and Austria. He never married but was close to Robert Schumann's sister, Clara. Brahms died of cancer in 1897. Here are some fun facts about Brahms:

  • He kept his pockets full of candy to hand out to children on his daily walks.

  • He liked merry-go-rounds and circus shows.

  • At the first performance of a concerto in which he’d worked for four years, only three people clapped; everyone else hissed.

  • Brahms sometimes had trouble sleeping. When this happened Brahms would compose lullabies at the piano to help himself relax.
